IMS – Intramuscular Stimulation

Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (Gunn IMS), also known as Dry Needling, is a whole-body approach to assess and treat chronic pain involving the musculoskeletal system. The approach relies on a detailed physical examination to find the source of neuropathic pain.

Neuropathy occurs when a nerve functions improperly, increasing the sensitivity of the muscles and causing chronic muscle tightening.

Gunn IMS utilizes thin needles to penetrate deep within muscle tissue, specifically targeting injured muscles that have shortened from distress. The goal of treatment is to release muscle shortening, which presses on and irritates the nerve. Examples of conditions that can benefit from treatment include:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Chronic neck/back pain
  • Headaches
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Repetitive strain injuries

Even though both Gunn IMS and Acupuncture involve the insertion of fine needles, the theory and approach are different. Gunn IMS is based on a medical assessment looking for physical signs and treating chronic muscle shortening.
